Erik Jones, No. 20 DEWALT Toyota (Started 1st, Finished 40th, Accident 147 of 272 laps)
Today’s race was the first of three races in the opening segment of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. The bottom four of 16 teams will be eliminated following the third race of this segment in two weeks at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Erik Jones earned the pole for his No. 20 DEWALT Toyota during Friday’s qualifying session. He settled in to run third over the course of the opening green flag run but went on to finish stage one in eighth while battling tight handling conditions. Those conditions persisted in stage two. He restarted 13th with 44 laps remaining in the stage.
The 20 team was working its way back into the top ten when the 4 car lost a tire and went into the outside wall directly in front of Jones on lap 146. The DEWALT Camry had gained a lot of momentum on the outside and there was no way to avoid the 4 car. The hard contact caused major damage to the nose of Jones’ Camry and ended his day early. He finished 40th and is now 15th in points with two races remaining in this opening round of the playoffs.
Next Up: The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series moves to Richmond International Raceway next Saturday night for the second race in the opening three-race playoff segment. Live coverage of the race will start on Saturday, September 22 at 7 PM on NBCSN.
